Colonel’s Corner: Educating On Military Legacy Research and Preservation

I apologize for being off the “net” for a bit, but I have been busy conducting presentations to several groups of great Americans here in the Old Dominion and America’s Dairyland.

During the presentations, I discussed how military records and unit histories are established, maintained, and may be accessed to develop an individual’s “Military Legacy.” I shared my unique multi-discipline approach, blending media conversion and preservation, with genealogy and military history, to allow individuals greater understanding of their loved one’s military legacy. I provided techniques to the groups teaching them how to more effectively preserve the military events and history of family members, to better preserve the evidence of their past, connect it to their present, while educating them on the importance to their future.

I was honored to have so many great Americans attend the presentations and help them to connect with and build their loved ones military legacy. Among some of the highlights was a young woman whom I was able to assist with identifying the unit her late husband fought in during the Korean War. He was a real “Devil Dog” earning a bronze star with V device, a couple of purple hearts, and several other decorations while fighting as a Marine infantryman in the Korean War. Another young lady I was able to assist by providing her with information on how to obtain her husband’s official military record from the Department of Veterans Affairs. He was a young ensign who served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. There were so many others that I was able to help, I couldn’t possibly list them all here, but it was my pleasure to help each and every one of them.

I am always interested in opportunities to come out and educate the public and spread the word on how to develop and preserve a loved one’s military legacy. If you’re interested in having me speak to your group or organization, send me a note, and I’ll be there.

Until we meet again, keep your musket clean and your powder dry!
