Family history is often stuck in drawers, in boxes in closets and just not thought about. It is kept because it is seen as important but is it really important if it is sitting like that? Dawn’s mother passed away a few months ago and while going through her things a cardboard record was found. Dawn vaguely remembered it was a great uncle in the military that sent it. Not much more than that was known. We decided to take the old worn, warped “record” and put it between some heavy flat things and see if we could get it a bit flatter and then try to digitize what was on there.
The record was rather worn and not kept kindly so the first pass was not very good. The needle kept jumping off of the record. We flattened again, increased the weight on the record player arm and eventually with a few trials and errors we were able to get it to play. We then put it through a bit of sound editing and if you click on the record you can hear a message from Dawn’s Uncle Richard, he was a Marine on July 23, 1944, he had just turned 18 the month before. He was sending a message to his older brother John (Dawn’s grandfather) and her Uncle Lyle. Lyle had been ill and Richard was wishing him well.
